Checks & Balances
As we’ve recently seen in Madison County government, a system of checks and balances is an absolute necessity to prevent abuses of power and to maintain the integrity of the government structure as a whole.
The County Auditor is the financial watchdog in the system of checks and balances.
The auditor’s job is to scrutinize, analyze, and monitor expenditures by county offices in order to safeguard the County’s assets and ensure tax dollars are being used to provide services and the basics that taxpayers expect from their hard-earned dollars.
The auditor must be fiercely independent of the County Board, the Board Chairman and elected officials in his role of maintaining the integrity of the financial management of the County.
